"Remote" in a job ad means one of three things: remote within a country, remote within a set of time zones, or truly worldwide. Only the last one is open to you, and it is the smallest group.

Where to look

Job boards that filter by "worldwide" or "anywhere", companies that use an employer of record service, and startups that already have staff in Africa. Contract roles are far more common than employment.

Roles with the most openings

Customer support, sales development, content, community management, QA and software engineering. East Africa's time zone overlaps well with Europe and the Middle East.

How to stand out

A LinkedIn profile that states your time zone and availability. A short portfolio site. References from previous remote or international clients. And a reliable internet setup you can describe in an interview.

Getting paid and staying compliant

Ask how they pay before you accept. Understand your own tax obligations as a contractor. Keep contracts and invoices; you will need them for visas and bank accounts later.
