Open weight AI models are the ones African builders should be watching

The headline race is between closed models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The quieter and arguably more important race is among models you can download.

Why open weights matter here

Cost: running a smaller open model on rented GPUs can be far cheaper at volume than paying per token. Data: sensitive customer or government data never leaves your infrastructure. Language: open models can be fine tuned on Swahili and other African languages that the big labs deprioritise.

The main options

Llama from Meta, DeepSeek's reasoning and general models, Mistral's efficient mid sized models and Qwen from Alibaba. Each has a permissive licence with conditions worth reading.

The catch

You need engineering capacity to host and maintain them, and the best open models still trail the frontier by a few months. For most startups, the practical path is to prototype on a closed API and move to open weights once volume justifies it.
