If your customers are in East Africa, they are on WhatsApp. The question is not whether to use it but how to structure it.

WhatsApp Business app

Free, good for a single person or a small shop. Catalogues, quick replies, labels and a business profile. The limitation is scale: one phone, one person answering.

WhatsApp Business Platform (API)

For teams and automation. Conversations are priced per category, and templates must be approved. This is where chatbots, order confirmations and customer support queues live. Local providers can set this up if you do not want to work with Meta directly.

Channels

One to many broadcasting that sits outside chats. Good for news, promotions and updates, with no reply noise. Growth is slower than on public social platforms because discovery is limited, so promote your channel link everywhere else.

Payments

In app payments are live in a handful of markets. Until they reach Tanzania, the practical pattern is a mobile money request inside the chat, which customers already understand.
